Advice from a videographer... for choosing an event videographer
If you're planning a special event, be it a wedding, a corporate party, or any other significant occasion, capturing those precious moments with a beautiful video is crucial. Relying on a professional videographer and photographer is important not only to have a lasting memory of the event and a professional product, but also to count on someone who allows you to enjoy the moment without having to worry about recording with your smartphone or camera! As someone who works in the video shooting and editing industry, I'll try to imagine the situation, this time imagining myself having to look for a videographer, with some key tips on how to select the right person for your/my event.
1. Experience and Portfolio of the videomaker
The first thing I would consider when choosing an event videographer is their experience. It's crucial for me to evaluate their portfolio to assess the quality of their work and determine whether it aligns with the style I'd like for my event video. A professional with extensive experience will have a deeper understanding of the different situations, timeframes, and challenges that may arise during event videography.
2. Reviews and References
Reviews and references are invaluable, especially when they come from a variety of sources. I come across many video makers, especially on YouTube, with large followings and numerous videos where they talk about expert video production, but who actually have very few products they've created for their clients. Personally, I'd ask the video makers to provide me with links to videos they've produced or their clients' web pages featuring their video work .
3. Videographer's Shooting Style
Every event videographer has their own unique style. Some prefer a documentary approach, while others focus on a cinematic or more dynamic aesthetic without necessarily following a chronological order. I believe it's important to choose based on your own taste and identify the style that best suits the type of event. Here too, I'd ask you to show me some previous work to get a clear idea of the style.
4. Professional videographer equipment
A professional event videographer should be equipped with high-quality equipment. I'd inquire about the tools they use for filming and post-production. But it's also important to remember that equipment alone won't make a great video! I've seen beautiful products shot with amateur cameras or even cell phones. At certain events, microphones are also necessary to record any speeches. I always use DJI Mic as a backup; they're small and unobtrusive, always useful and quick to use. If there are speakers, I always have a spare one to record continuously. I'd ask the videographer if they have them with them!

5. Creativity and Innovation
Creativity is essential when it comes to video shooting and editing. I personally like working with videographers who have an eye for detail and are ready to capture important moments even when they're unplanned.
6. Services Offered
Check the services offered by the video maker. Some may offer complete packages that
Some include both filming and editing, while others may focus on just one stage of the process. Others may offer photography or video alone or in conjunction with a professional photographer (this is usually the solution I always offer to my clients, depending on their budget, of course). Make sure you understand exactly what's included in the package and if there are any additional costs.
7. Preliminary Meetings
Arrange a meeting with the videographer to discuss the details of the event. This is the perfect opportunity to express your expectations, discuss the work plan, and address any concerns. A good relationship with the videographer is essential to achieving optimal results. It will also be an opportunity to schedule the various events that may arise during an event, such as a speech at a wedding or a business dinner. Since times can vary, it's best to use more appropriate timelines. For example, for a dinner, tell the videographer that "So-and-so's speech will be between the starters and main courses," or "Dad's speech will be before dessert." This will be invaluable for them in preparing shots and microphones at the right time!
